Student Financial Assistance

How do I apply for financial assistance?

You must formally apply and be accepted into a UofN Kona school before you will be considered for financial assistance. Once accepted, your school leader or the Student Services Office will help you secure the necessary application forms.

How will I be notified if I have received a financial award?

Within one week of a decision, the Financial Assistance Team will notify in writing the school leaders whose students will be receiving awards. School leaders have the responsibility of notifying their students.

Is financial assistance available for DTS students?

Generally, no. With two exceptions: The Category of Nations scholarship/discount and the Children of YWAM Staff Discount (see below for both). This school teaches many aspects of the nature and character of God, including His role as our provider. Over the last 20 years, thousands of DTS students have experienced miraculous provision for their school as they have asked God to provide their school fees. At present, campus scholarships are available only for students from countries who are unable to do a DTS in their region because of religious persecution or extraordinary hardship. Recommendation from a YWAM leader is required.

What is the Category of Nations discount?

Students from developing nations are eligible to apply for this scholarship/discount. This scholarship/discount is up to $1,500 per school, and students applying for both Discipleship Training Schools as well as Upper Level Schools are eligible. See the list of countries that are considered developing nations.

What is the Children of YWAM Staff discount?

Students whose parents have served as missionaries in YWAM for 7+ years are eligible for a discount.

What does financial assistance cover?

Financial assistance awards are applied to tuition, room and board fees. Airfares, outreach costs, personal expenses, and insurance are not covered. Only partial awards are given toward a student’s UofN Kona fees. Students can receive financial assistance more than once, but they must reapply for it each time they take a new UofN Kona school.

When should I apply for financial assistance?

There is a limited pool of funds available each quarter. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications can be sent to: Financial Assistance Team, 75-5851 Kuakini Hwy. #35, Kailua-Kona HI, 96740-2199 USA or emailed to financialassistance@uofnkona.edu. Applications received after a school starts will not be considered. For students applying for the Category of Nations scholarship/discount, these applications can be sent to: finance.wg@uofnkona.edu. Is financial assistance available for other UofN Kona schools?

Yes, but most current funds are designated for students from B and C category nations (as identified in the UofN International Reference Guide). Awards are typically made on the basis of a student’s need, leadership potential, a long-term missions calling and clearly stated ministry goals. Currently students from industrialized nations are eligible for assistance from only two funds. These include the Mary Graham Endowment Fund (for continuing School of Biblical Studies students) and the DeFreitas Fund (for degree students and long-term YWAMers who have been serving overseas and need further training to continue their ministry).

What are the academic requirements?

All applicants must be in good standing academically, morally and financially with the UofN Kona community. Audit students and those on academic probation are not eligible.Students who withdraw will have any refund reduced by the amount of financial assistance awarded them. Students who have an “I” grade (incomplete) will need to complete the course before being considered for further assistance. Students who have failed a course will not be given assistance to repeat the failed course.
